Who should take this course?
This course is for students who have previously taken four semesters of Yiddish.
As YIVO is renaming several of our Yiddish levels, students who took Advanced Beginner or Intermediate Yiddish in Fall 2020 should enroll in Winter Intensive Beginner III. Students who took Advanced Intermediate Yiddish in Fall 2020 should enroll in Winter Intensive Intermediate I.
What topics will this class cover?
This course will strengthen students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in Yiddish. The primary text for reading and language (grammar) will be Sholem Aleichem’s Motl Peyse Dem Khazns (Motl the Cantor’s Son) adapted and edited by Sheva Zucker. College Yiddish will serve as the course’s secondary text. This course is designed for students who are comfortable reading Yiddish independently, with occasional assists from the instructor and the recordings of Motl Peyse Dem Khazns.
Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.
Course Materials:
This course will use two textbooks:
- Motl Peyse dem Khazns edited by Anne Gawenda and Sheva Zucker. Please purchase the textbook with the audio recording here. Note: please purchase this textbook far in advance to be sure it arrives before class begins.
- College Yiddish: An Introduction to the Yiddish Language and to Jewish Life and Culture by Uriel Weinreich. If you do not yet own a copy (any edition is fine), please email info@yivo.org.
Anna Fishman Gonshor is Faculty Lecturer of Yiddish Studies in the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University (retired). She has been guest lecturer for several university Yiddish programs and various institutions across North America. As a translator her work includes film, articles for academic publications and archival materials. In addition, she is a longstanding faculty member of the YIVO Uriel Weinreich Summer Program in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture.
