This is a live, online course held weekly on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted mostly in Yiddish, with some English used when necessary.

Who should take this course?
This course is for students who have previously taken three semesters of Yiddish. It is appropriate for those who completed Beginner III Yiddish in spring 2021. It is also appropriate for those enrolled in Alef in the 2021 Summer Program who have mastered the Alef material.
What topics will this class cover?
Starting with Lesson 9A in Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume I by Sheva Zucker, this course will work through the book weaving in other stories and songs along the way. Students who join the class should have exposure to and an understanding of the grammatical structures, vocabulary and idioms introduced in the first eight units of the book. The course will integrate listening, reading, speaking, and writing with the study of grammar and culture.
Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Perl (Paula) Teitelbaum was born and raised in a Yiddish-speaking home in post-war Wroclaw. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, Paula became actively involved in New York City’s Yiddish-speaking circles. During her professional career Paula has taught Yiddish as well as Spanish and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) in a variety of settings, including college, and pre-K through high school and adult education classes. Using her TESOL background Paula has applied some of the most successful teaching methods into her Yiddish classes.
