Call for Submissions: American Racist Violence in the Early Twentieth Century

May 31-June 1 2021 will mark the hundredth anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, a vicious event in which mobs of white residents wielding weapons attacked black residents and businesses in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In memory of this somber occasion and the racially motivated violence that erupted in America in the early twentieth century more broadly, YIVO and In geveb are joining together in an effort to make Yiddish sources about these events more accessible to students, teachers, and researchers. We invite submissions that contextualize Yiddish writers’ and publics’ responses to racist violence in the early twentieth century. In particular, we are interested in:

• Briv funem arkhiv essays for the blog that focus on archival or documentary evidence about racially motivated violence in America.
• Translations of Yiddish newspaper coverage of these events or literary writing that engages with these events.
• Pedagogy resources for teaching about these events using Yiddish sources.
